The original Silent Hill 2 team sought more drastic changes, but Bloober Team kept the remake grounded.

When it comes to remakes that deviate significantly from the original material, the assumption is often that the new developers are trying to innovate. However, with the Silent Hill 2 Remake, the situation was different: members of the original game’s team wanted more substantial changes, but Bloober Team resisted these ideas.

Silent Hill 2 Developers Desired More Changes in the Remake

According to Motoi Okamoto, the current producer of the Silent Hill franchise, in an interview with Famitsu magazine, both Masahiro Ito (Silent Hill 2’s art director) and Akira Yamaoka (sound designer and composer), who were part of Team Silent, wanted to implement significant changes in the remake.

For them, recreating the same experience was not appealing, and they aimed for more extensive alterations in Silent Hill 2 Remake. However, Bloober Team was opposed to changes that would undermine the original game’s atmosphere – quite a stance!

Nonetheless, it appears that both Bloober Team and the original developers reached a satisfying compromise.

The production team confirmed that while the monsters' designs, which are integral to the storyline, will remain unchanged, there will be new and alternative versions – a commendable middle ground. According to Okamoto:

"In the end, they got it right. I think there were many aspects that the original developers wanted to change drastically in the remake. Thanks to the opinions of Bloober Team, who are also huge fans of the original, the remake will be very respectful of the original material.”
